Balangir district

Balangir (also Bolangir ) is a district in the Indian state of Odisha. In the district live 1,337,194 inhabitants. Seat of the district administration is the city. The area is 6551.5 km ². The district was formed on 1 November 1949. On 1 April 1993 the district Sonepur in the east of Balangir was cleaved.

Geography

Balangir is situated in the center Odishas, bordering the districts of Bargarh, Sonpur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Nuapara. The temperatures vary between a minimum of 16.6 ° C in December and up to 48.7 ° C in May. The annual rainfall is about 1440 mm. The three main rivers are the Suktel and Lant, each of which opens into the Tel south of the district. In the northwest of the district the Gandhamardhan Hills lie.

Demography

According to the census of 2001 shows that 50.4 % of the inhabitants of the district of men and 49.6 % women. 55.7 % of the population can read and write, of which 71.67 % of the men, in women only 39.51%. The majority of residents ( 98.1 %) are Hindus, Christianity (1%) and Islam (0.5%) play only a minor role. Is predominantly spoken Oriya, Hindi and English.

Economy

Balangir has some minerals, such as graphite, manganese, quartzite and granite. Nevertheless, the agriculture, especially the cultivation of rice and sugarcane plays a major role.
