Title list

The music was composed by Ulver, the texts of Garm written and supposedly translated into Altdänische of AiwarikiaR. In fact, however, it is more of a archaisiertes, poetisierendes Norwegian, with the impression of an ancient language is also reinforced by the (partially free fantasized ) orthography. Even the title of the album, Bergtatt, is a unique Norwegian vocabulary.

Music, lyrics and booklet

Ulver mix on the debut album the " harsh vocals " and the " washed-out, buzzing guitars " of Black Metal with acoustic, folk -influenced passages. Between these extremes, which should characterize each one of the two following albums Kveldssanger and Nattens Madrigal, there are mid-tempo parts in which reminds Garms processed with overdubs singing to a choir of Gregorian monks.

The archaisierten lyrics tell the story of a girl who gets lost in the forest, is lured by trolls in the mountains ( Bergtatt ) and never seen again. This is a common motif of the Norwegian fairy tale world.

The painting on the cover (of Tanya "night" Stene ) shows a dark wooded ridge, the background photo on the back cover a misty wooded ridge. In the Supplement to B & W Photography Find the then 18 - to 20 -year-old band members AiwarikiaR, Garm, Haavard, Skoll and Aismal in wild and romantic scenery. The lyrics were printed before just such a background in fracture. On the last page of Beihefts Garm Ulver's declared belief in the supernatural and dedicates the album to " grim powers " ( Morskemaktene, one of morsk, bass ',' grim ' and Mørkemaktene, the dark forces ' derived neologism ).

Reception

William York of Allmusic According Bergtatt is a more atmospheric than aggressive album that stands out due to its varied singing and songwriting. It is an excellent debut, and one of the highlights in Ulver Discography. Captain Chaos of Vampster find Bergtatt " in places, a bit tacky and far from mature, but beautiful is not another Black Metal album this time." In Wolf -Rüdiger Mühlmann from Rock Hard Album acts " over long distances very close to nature and its vulnerability already almost feminine ." The magazine took Bergtatt on its list of the 25 most important black metal albums of all time. Also laut.de notes that it is considered a " milestone of the genre ."

January Leichsenring referred Bergtatt as a concept album, which was co-founded the turning away from modernity towards our native customs, romantic nostalgia and mythical transcendence in Black Metal. According to him, meet and reflect anti-modern attitude, pre-modern Tell motive and altertümelnde language to each other on this album.
