Big Joe 1

Big Joe 1 was an unmanned flight as part of the Mercury program and was testing the ablative heat shield of the Mercury capsule. A model of the capsule with an Atlas D missile was launched (serial number Atlas 628/10-D ). However, the two outer engines of the rocket separated as planned, causing the planned level could not be reached. In addition, the separation of the capsule from the rocket to 138 seconds was too late. The capsule splashed down 800 km therefore too early, the heat shield but worked as planned and the capsule survived the re-entry intact. Since this flight enough data could be collected, the proposed Big- Joe - 2 mission was canceled.

The launch of Big Joe 1 was originally scheduled for July 4th 1959 due to problems with the main engine and later due to telemetry problems he has been postponed twice.

Currently, the capsule used in the Garber Facility of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC be visited.

The maximum speed was 23,910 km / h, the maximum acceleration of 12 g, the capsule flew over a distance of 2292 km, the peak point was at an altitude of 153 km. The payload weighed 1159 kg.
