Biliran

Prior to her political independence, the island belonged to the province of Leyte. The island is located in the Eastern Visayas, north of Leyte and west of Samar. The total area of the island is 536.01 square kilometers. 55 % of which are agricultural land and 23 % is forested area.

Biliran has 161 760 inhabitants ( census May 1, 2010 ). The population lives mainly from fishing and agriculture. Mainly rice, corn, vegetables and coconut trees are grown.

In the province there are eight cities that are divided into a total of 132 barangays.

Tourist Biliran has barely developed, although the island for nature lovers has a lot to offer. Particularly noteworthy were the remaining tropical rain forest, several waterfalls, hot springs and currently dormant volcanoes. For the province also includes the molded by volcanic forces Maripipi Iceland, which marks the northernmost extent of the province. Higatangan Iceland marks the westernmost extent of the province. Other smaller islands are Dalutan, Caygan, Sambawan and Capinahan Iceland.

Geology

Geologically the island is a complex volcano. The highest of the many lava domes is the Surio with 1301 m above sea level. The rock of the island consists mainly of andesite.

Investigations by the radiocarbon method have shown the emergence of the island during the Pleistocene, by the formation of a volcanic center in the north of the island today Biliran. Fumarolic fields and hot springs cover the 20 x 35 km wide island. The only known volcanic activity was a phreatic explosive eruption in 1939.
