Boards of Canada

Boards of Canada ( BoC short ) is a Scottish musician duo consisting of Michael Sandison ( born June 1, 1970) and Marcus Eoin Sandison ( born July 21, 1971). Her works, which are attributable to the Electronica environment, both published under the pseudonym Hell Interface.

Musical Style

Characteristic of the music are usually a low tempo, hip-hop -inspired rhythms and playful melodies. Most of the listeners of the music is attributed to a psychedelic quality, also it is often associated with childhood memories and nostalgia. Essential for addition to the tunes is also the creative use of samples, especially from film and television. The sampled passages are often barely perceptible and partly alienated (eg played backwards ) involved in the background of the songs and create an organic atmosphere, sometimes a kind of diffuse anxiety (especially on the album Geogaddi ). This also means that a lot of fans on the internet work together to try to decrypt the contents of the text passages and up speculative theories about their meaning leads.

Career

The two musicians were hiding for years that they are siblings. It was only with the release of their fourth album The Campfire Headphase both announced that they were brothers. You could have this fact at the beginning of her career secretive not to be rashly compared to the brothers Hartnoll of Orbital order.

The cooperation between the brothers arose from the common preference for watching movies, series and documentaries. In the 70s and 80s, both self-produced with the setting of short films have made their first musical steps. The home movies were getting longer and it was followed by bigger photo documentation, where Boards of Canada always contributed the music. From the late 80s, a musician community was formed out of frequently changing cast. The core of the group was, however, always from Marcus Eoin (drums ) and Mike Sandison ( bass).

The band name is derived from the National Film Board of Canada, the state film agency for the promotion of cultural and social representation of Canada, whose nature documentaries had a significant influence on the work of both.

From the 90s BoC appeared at various festivals with their own audio-video installations. In Scotland, the Pentland Hills Hexagon Sun was baptized Studio. The own label under which they publish for the first time, is called Music70. Here the first EP and soundtracks are issued. 1996 land their first EP " Twoism " by chance on the desk of Sean Booth ( Autechre ), who published at that time, among other things at Skam Records. Then BoC received a recording contract with the label.

From 1998 they jointly published on Skam and Warp Records their first LP "Music Has the Right to Children", which was hailed by the press as album of the month. The music magazine NME took their debut album in the top 25 psychedelic albums on which will also the albums of the Byrds, the Beatles or My Bloody Valentine.
