Bodmin Moor

Bodmin Moor ( Cornish: Goen Bren ) is a 208 km ² large high moorland in northeastern Cornwall, United Kingdom. The subsoil consists of granite of Carboniferous age.

The name " Bodmin Moor " was introduced in 1813 by the State Land Survey Ordnance Survey. Previously, the area was known as " Fowey Moor ", after springing here river. The Cornish name " Goen Bren " is certainly even older.

Impressive gates ( caused by weathering of rock formations ) rise above the hilly country that was densely populated during the Bronze Age. Many prehistoric burial mounds and stone circles are found distributed over the landscape. Today, the region is almost deserted with the exception of the small village Bolventor. On the southern slopes of the Moors is Dozmary pool to which, according to the tradition of the Arthurian legend, Sir Bedivere threw the sword Excalibur to give it back to the Lady of the Lake. In addition to the pool of the reservoir Dozmary Colliford Lake is another wetland on Bodmin Moor.

Bodmin Moor has been classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty ( AONB ) and forms part of the Cornwall AONB. The highest peak, 420 m high Brown Willy, is also the highest point in Cornwall.
