Bombardier Transportation

Bombardier Transportation is a house owned by the Canadian company Bombardier company, locomotives, railcars, streetcars, subways, commuter trains manufactures passenger carriages and signal boxes.

History to 2004

Bombardier Transportation was founded in 1974, after Bombardier had received a major order for 423 subway cars for the city of Montreal. 1975 Bombardier bought the American Locomotive Company / Montreal Locomotive Works, who worked until 1985 in the locomotive sector. In 1995, Bombardier Transportation, the rail sector of the company, with further acquisitions of companies in France, Austria and Germany returned to the transport business.

In Germany, Bombardier in 1995, the wagon factory Talbot in Aachen and 1998 the German wagon AG ( DWA, formerly LOWA ) with operations in Berlin, Halle, Görlitz, Bautzen and Niesky. The Vevey adopted by the DWA Technologies in 1997, shortly referred to as Vevey, not to be confused with the homonymous village of Vevey, formerly Ateliers de constructions mecaniques de Vevey ( ACMV ) in Villeneuve, formerly in Vevey in Switzerland, so also joined Bombardier.

In 2001, the acquisition of DaimlerChrysler Rail Systems (formerly ABB Daimler -Benz Transportation ) ( Adtranz ), based in the north of Berlin, close to Tegel Airport and close to the largest plant site Hennig village was. Germany's other Adtranz locations in Mannheim, Kassel, Nuremberg, Siegen and Brunswick came thus to Bombardier. In Switzerland, affected by the takeover were the locations of Zurich and Turgi and Pratteln, which was maintained against the then planning of Adtranz by Bombardier for the time being.

The Adtranz sites in the UK, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Portugal, Italy and Poland and the joint venture in China were taken. On 13 November 2001 the Company announced a fundamental restructuring of its European production activities. Capital-intensive activities should thereby be concentrated in specialized factories. Above all, in Germany there had to be considered antitrust objections. Founded only in 2000 between Stadler and Adtranz joint venture Stadler Pankow GmbH, 2001 changed completely in possession of the Stadler Rail Group and therefore the licenses of some vehicles such as Regio-Shuttle and Variobahn.

In early 2003 the company established with Bombardier - CPC Propulsion Systems in China, the joint venture for the production and marketing of powertrain components. With effect from 1 May 2003, the Company sold its factory Vetschau a Hungarian group of investors. In the fall of 2003, the company announced that due to losses to close at least six of his then 37 plants in Europe.

History from the restructuring from 2004

In the wake of the recession in rail vehicle group management to reduce the division Transportation decided and announced the decision at the press conference in March 2004. The downsizing is particularly true of Europe and includes the closure of seven production sites in five countries and a reduction of 6,600 jobs worldwide ( including 86 percent in Europe ) or 18.5 percent of the total workforce of Bombardier Transportation.

By the end of 2004, the closure of the traditional location of Nuremberg, in Amadora, the only production facility in Portugal and two manufacturing facilities in the UK. Until 31 December 2005, a second plant in the UK and a plant in Sweden Kalmar were closed. On the same date towards the Ammendorf were in Halle ( Saale) closed with over 700 employees and the factory Pratteln in the canton of Basel-Land with 520 employees, the latter was largely shut down since April 28, 2005. The plant closures accounted for only a part of the job cuts; in Germany were reduced a further 1200 points (out of 10,100 ), Switzerland another 70 points (out of 1350).

Even after completion of the restructuring Germany will remain with eight production locations and approximately 8600 employees the largest site of Bombardier Transportation, followed by Great Britain with six plants and nearly 4,300 employees. Stay In Switzerland, just under 760 employees distributed to the site in Villeneuve ( small series, nearly 160 employees) and the development sites Zurich Oerlikon and Turgi.

The headquarters of Bombardier Transportation was moved in 2006 to the former buildings of the Royal railway department, then Reichsbahndirektion, Berlin Schöneberg on shore 1 in Berlin.

On 12 May 2010, Bombardier received from the Swiss Federal Railways SBB the largest contract in the history of the railway company. The company should supply 59 double-deck trains ( TWINDEXX ) for long distance service. The total volume of the order is around 1.9 billion Swiss francs. Bombardier is the new trains claims to be finished at the sites in Villeneuve, Switzerland and German Görlitz.

Of the initially over two years, delivered late regional trains of the series Talent 2 summer 2013 210 trains have been handed over to the German railway. At the beginning of 2013, Bombardier Transportation has received its first order of a private operator for these vehicles.

In October 2012 it was announced that Bombardier would close the Aachen plant with 600 jobs in the summer of 2013 after the conclusion of major contracts. There was no follow-up orders, was carried out in support. Despite intervention of different groups Bombardier held at the closing.
