Bradwell nuclear power station

Decommissioned Reactors ( gross ):

The decommissioned nuclear power plant is located at Bradwell Bradwell Waterside on the peninsula Dengie, Essex in the UK. The nuclear power plant consisted of two reactors of the Magnox type with a total installed capacity of 292 MWe. It was built on the edge of an airfield from World War II and decommissioned in 2002. The ongoing demolition takes place under the supervision of the new owner since 2004, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, the last operator was British Nuclear Fuels.

Location

The power plant is located on the peninsula at the mouth of the Dengie River Blackwater. The site was chosen because the country had a low agricultural value, is easily accessible from the North Sea and sufficient cooling water is available.

Bradwell is one of the possible locations, which has been selected by British Energy for a new generation of nuclear reactors.

History

The nuclear power plant Bradwell consisted of two Magnox reactors with a net electrical output of 123 MWe and a gross electrical output of 146 MWe each. Construction of both reactors was on 1 January 1957. Bradwell Reactor 1 was first synchronized on July 1, 1962, the power supply and went on the same day in commercial operation. Bradwell 2 was synchronized on July 6, 1962, the net and went on November 12, 1962 in commercial operation. In 1966, twenty natural uranium fuel rods from Bradwell stolen .. Until 1989, Bradwell was operated by the state-owned Central Electricity Generating Board ( CEGB ) and, after having partial privatization Nuclear Electric. From 1994 to 1998 Bradwell was operated under the new company name Magnox Electric and was from 1998 to 2004, owned by British Nuclear Fuels. In 1999, it was announced that the power plant operation in 2002 would be discontinued. On 1 June 2001, Magnox Electric known in six counts of guilty to unauthorized releases of low-level radioactive waste in Bradwell and Hinkley Point A and was sentenced to a fine of £ 100,000 and over £ 28,000 in damages. The reactor Bradwell 2 was shut down on 30 March 2002, the first block followed a day later. After the restructuring of the UK nuclear industry in 2004, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, the new owner was, who supervises the demolition of the plant by Magnox South. The last fuel element in the reactor 2 was launched in December 2005 for reprocessing to Sellafield. On 17 February 2009 Magnox Electric was convicted by a jury of Chelmsford Crown Court guilty of being responsible for the seepage of radioactive effluents from the collection of a decontamination system between 1990 and 2004 and sentenced to a fine of £ 250,000 as well as damages in excess of £ 150,000.
