Braine -l'Alleud ( Walloon Brinne -l ' Alou, Dutch Eigenbrakel ) is a commune in the French-speaking province of Walloon Brabant in Belgium. It consists of three parts: Braine -l'Alleud, Lillois- Witterzée and Ophain - Bois- Seigneur- Isaac.

Braine is an old name for the creek grove, which rises in Lillois- Witterzée and flows at Clabecq in the canal Charleroi -Brussels.

History

The area of Braine- l'Alleud was inhabited in prehistoric times. In the 12th century the village was first mentioned.

The Battle of Waterloo was to partially in the field of Braine- l'Alleud. The Stephen's Church ( Eglise St- Etienne) served as a field hospital. The famous Lion's Mound is located in Braine- l'Alleud.

In 1982 Braine -l'Alleud winners of the Europe Prize for the dissemination of European unification.

Twinning

Braine -l'Alleud has five cities entered into a partnership. The oldest of Ouistreham in France was established in 1954. 1978 partnerships with Menden arrived in Germany and Basingstoke and Deane in the UK to 1985, the partnership with Drummondville in Canada and in 2005 the partnership with Šlapanice in the Czech Republic.
