Bridgeport is a city in Wise County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located on U.S. Highway 114, 13 km west of Decatur, in the west of Wise County, on a tributary of the Trinity River. It has a total area of 9.7 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface.

History

The result is the establishment in February 1860, when a part of the colonists built under the leadership of William H. Hunt, the later 29th U.S. Secretary of the Navy, a wooden bridge over the Trinity River and settled here. The bridge was part of the Butterfield Overland Mail Route. During the American Civil War it was destroyed in 1873 and replaced by an iron structure. In the same year, the first post office opened.

1893 moved the rock Iceland Railroad Company its rails about 3 km to the east and the nearest buildings were built in this direction, so that over time the location of the settlement shifted 1-2 km further east. In 1913 she was incorporated as a city in 1872 and 1920 she had inhabitants. 1931, the nearby Lake Bridgeport was reported as a recreational area and as a new industry was thus, after the end of 40 years operated coal mining, tourism added. From the 20s to the mid 50s, the population remained constant at around 2000 inhabitants. In 1986 the town had 3737 inhabitants, 153 commercial establishments and was the second largest city in the county.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 4,309 people in 1,383 households and 1,023 families. The population density was 448.4 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 79.95 % White, 2.65 % African American, 0.44 % Native American, 0.12 % Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander residents from the and 14.67 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.14% were of mixed descent, and 28.20 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,383 households, 42.4 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.1 % were married couples living together. 11.2% were single mothers and 26.0 % were non-families. 23.6 % of all households were single-person households, and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.40, people.

30.0% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 % from 18 to 24, 30.9% 25-44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.4 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 85.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 78.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 31,016, and the median income for a family $ 36,742. Males have a median income of $ 31,044 versus $ 22,204 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,335. 16.6 % of the population and 12.8 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 22.2 % have children under the age of 18 and 8.7 % of those 65 or older.
