The Federal Highway 13 (abbreviated as BAB 13) - Short form: Highway 13 ( Abbreviation: A 13) - is a federal highway in the eastern part of the Federal Republic of Germany, which connects the cities of Berlin and Dresden each other. It starts at Schönefelder Cross at the southern Berliner Ring ( A10 ) and ends at the motorway junction Dresden -Nord ( A 4). Through the branches off the motorway junction Spreewald A 15 and the city of Cottbus is connected to this route.

Important stations are Bestensee (B 246), mid- forest, Teupitz, Lübbenau / Spreewald, Freienhufen (B 96), Black Heath, outskirts and Radeburg.

History

The course of the A 13 was in the early 1930s initially planned differently implemented than later. The track alignment was originally about 30 kilometers to the west take place between Golßen and outskirts approximately along the railway line between Berlin and Dresden, and thus affect the villages Doberlug -Kirchhain, sinister forest, Luckau and Schlieben. Thus, the motorway junction to the A 15 would be omitted and the existing highway free gap in the motorway network between Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin and Cottbus had a lesser degree.

The sections of the Cross Schönefeld to the connection Teupitz and the triangle Dresden-Nord for connecting the outskirts were 1938 two lanes (two lanes in each direction) and the section on the outskirts - Ruhland completed a single lane. Here, the second road was opened to traffic until the year 1939. In the same year the 39.5 km long section Ruhland - Calau ( two lanes ) followed. In 1940, the sections Teupitz - free Walde and AD Spreewald followed - AS Calau in two-lane version. Also in 1940 was to close the gap of the last missing section Freiwalde - completes the line between Berlin and Dresden in single-lane design AD Spreewald. However, the crossing building remained unfinished at the motorway junction Spreewald, allowing vehicles to and from Dresden had to drive on the opposite lane, the southern ramps. The motorway junction Spreewald was not released until the December 4, 1962 without crossing for traffic.

In the area of the motorway interchange Dresden- Nord A was 13 1951-1971 used at times as a motorcycle and car racing track ( highway spider Dresden).

The German section of the motorway from Dresden to Prague was configured in first drafts after the turn as a continuation of the A 13. Meanwhile, the route was realized as A 17.

Airstrip at Ruhland

On a long, perfectly straight piece of track between junctions outskirts and Ruhland was until the 1990s a highway airstrip. The usually grassed median strip was concreted at this point. This resulted in the two lanes along an airstrip. This should ostensibly serve as Behelfsbahn for the aircraft of the National People's Army and its allied forces, since, according to the scenario existing airfields were provided only for the startup. It was expected that in case of any invasion no landing of fighter jets would have been possible on the home airport.

Located plots for jet aircraft, which were identified by the heaped Abgasstrahlabweisern were at both ends of the runway. Thus the nearby forest should be protected from fires that could result from the ignition of a jet engine, for example, can. After the turn, the aircraft pitches have been converted into parking lots, and even these were dismantled, so that in 2005 only bulk cargo Abgasstrahlabweiser were seen.
