The Federal Highway 55 ( Abbreviation: B 55) leads from Jülich Cologne, Mountain Town, Olpe, Lenne city and Meschede to Rheda -Wiedenbrück.
History
The introduced in 1934 Reichsstrasse 55 linked three sections that were built in the 1820s.
- The Koblenz -Minden road was built in 1816-1828 in several stages and should the Prussian garrison cities of Koblenz and Minden connect with each other on the shortest path. The northern part of Koblenz -Minden road was later numbered as National Highway 61, while the southern section from Olpe on Freudenberg to churches was not raised to the national highway.
- The 1823-1834 built Cologne - Olpe road led from Cologne on the river Agger along the Oberbergische country. After its completion perverted since 1835 a stagecoach between Cologne and Olpe.
- The Köln- Jülich road was before removing the Cologne - Düren road, the main route between Cologne and Aachen. A large part of this section, for example, the Aachener Straße in Cologne has, however, its roots in the Via Belgica, a Roman highway from Cologne via Jülich, Maastricht to Boulogne -sur -Mer.
Substitutions
- The section between Jülich and Berg fell to the home lignite mine Hambach victim and was in the 1980s, replaced by a new route.
- The section between Refrath and Overath was replaced by the A 4.
- The original route through Cologne on the Deutz bridge was replaced by the new building of the Severin Bridge through this.
- For the through traffic there in Cologne or an alternative route under the name Federal Highway 55a about the interior channel and Zoobrücke road to motorway junction Köln -Ost.
- The section between Cologne and Sindelsdorf was replaced by the A 1, A 4 and A 61.
