The choice

The elections ended with the defeat of the Liberal government of Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie. Canada had been affected during Mackenzie's tenure of a recession and his party was expelled for this reason by the voters in the opposition. The support of free trade was pushed by the Liberals to little recognition, especially for entrepreneurs in Toronto and Montreal, who feared an all-powerful U.S. competitors.

The victory of the Conservatives and the Liberal - Conservative associated with them has allowed John Macdonald, to assume the post of prime minister for the second time, after he had been five years earlier plunged as a result of the Pacific Scandal.
