Canadian federal election, 1891

The 7th Canadian General Election (English 7th Canadian General Election, French 7e élection fédérale canadienne ) took place on 5 March 1891. Were elected 215 Members of the Canadian House of Commons (English House of Commons, French Chambre des Communes ). For the fourth time in a row won by the Conservatives of Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald.

The choice

Main point of contention during the election campaign was Macdonald's National Policy, a protectionist economy program to protect the Canadian economy from the influence of the United States. The Liberals, however, were in favor of unrestricted free trade. Once again succeeded the Conservatives and the Liberal - Conservative associated with them, just to win an absolute majority of seats. Only three months after the elections Macdonald died of a stroke, his successor John Abbott approached.

Wilfrid Laurier was the first time Chairman of the Liberal. Although he lost the elections, but could reduce the distance considerably. Five years later he won with an absolute majority and became the first francophone Prime Minister of Canada.

The turnout was 64.4 %.
