Carlos Cuartas

Carlos Enrique Cuartas Bedoya ( born August 15, 1940 in Itagüí, Departamento de Antioquia, Colombia; † July 10, 2011 ) was a Colombian chess player. He was one of the best chess players in Colombia.

Life

Carlos Cuartas was chess teacher in his home province of Antioquia, and later in Cali. End of the 1970s he spent some time in Switzerland. He died of cancer.

Achievements

Seven times he was the Colombian Single Cup win: 1965 in Belencito ( Departamento de Boyacá ), 1967 in Bucaramanga, 1968 in Medellín, 1970 in Bogotá, 1975 in Bogotá, Cali and 1976 in 1983 in Envigado ( Departamento de Antioquia ).

With the Colombian national team, he took 1964-1994 to ten Chess Olympiads with a total score of 77.5 points out of 130 games ( 53, = 49, -28, 59.6 percent ), where he in 1966 in Havana and in 1976 in Haifa played on the first board. 1972 in Skopje, he received an individual bronze medal for his performance of 13 points from 18 games on the third board.

In 1975, the title of International Master, he was awarded. His highest Elo rating was 2440 in 1977.
