Carlos Kloppenburg

Karl Joseph Bonaventura Kloppenburg, OFM (actually Karl Josef Kloppenburg, born November 2, 1919 in Molbergen, Germany, † May 8, 2009 in Novo Hamburgo, Brazil) was Bishop of Novo Hamburgo.

Life

After leaving school he attended in Rolante 1936/1937 the seminary in São Leopoldo and 1938/1939 the seminary in Santa Maria. From 1940 to 1942 he studied philosophy at the seminary of São Leopoldo and 1943-1947 theology in the Franciscan monastery in Petrópolis. Bonaventura Kloppenburg was ordained in Bagé in Rio Grande do Sul on 21 December 1946 priests. He then studied dogmatic theology at the Pontifical University Antonianum in Rome, where he became in 1950 a doctorate.

Bonaventura Kloppenburg was a professor of dogmatic theology at the Universidade Católica de Petrópolis (1951 to 1971), the Catholic University in Porto Alegre (1972) and at the Franciscan high school Antonianum in Rome ( 1973); from 1974 to 1982 he was rector of the Latin American Pastoral Institute ( IPLA ) CELAM in Medellin. The Revista Brasileira Eclesiástica was published by him 1951-1972.

He was from 1962 to 1965 Peritus the Second Vatican Council. In the period between 1975 and 1990 he was nominated for four periods a member of the International Theological Commission, which was under the direction of Joseph Ratzinger. Bonaventura Kloppenburg was a longtime member of the Roman Congregation for the Clergy, the Council for Interreligious Dialogue and the Council for Promoting Christian Unity. On the CELAM General conferences in Rio de Janeiro in 1955, in Medellín in 1968 and Puebla in 1979, he worked as a theological adviser.

On May 22, 1982, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as titular bishop of Vulturaria and da Bahia appointed auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of São Salvador. He received his episcopal consecration on 1 August of the same year the Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia, Avelar Brandão Vilela Cardinal; Co-consecrators were Alfredo Vicente Cardinal Scherer, Archbishop of Porto Alegre, and Alfonso López Trujillo, Archbishop of Medellín. As episcopal motto he chose Sub Umbris Fideliter.

On August 8, 1986, he was appointed Bishop of Novo Hamburgo. On November 22, 1995 John Paul II accepted his resignation on the basis of the age limit.

He was a doctor father of Leonardo Boff, but broke with Boff. Kloppenburg was considered a companion of Joseph Ratzinger ( Benedict XVI. ).

He was with the honorary doctorate by the Jesuit university Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos ( Unisinos ), São Leopoldo excellent, 1999.
