Castagnola-Cassarate

Castagnola - Cassarate is a district of the city of Lugano in Lugano Circle East, in the district of Lugano in the Swiss canton of Ticino. It is located on the southwestern foot of Monte Bre Lake Lugano. Until the incorporation into the city of Lugano Castagnola in 1972 formed an independent political community.

Geography

Castagnola included the fractions Ruvigliana and Suvigliana, the hamlet Cassarate in the plane and Caprino and Cavallino across the lake. The district Cassarate lies at the mouth of the eponymous river in Lake Lugano. The village had 5509 inhabitants, of which 3453 in Cassarate in 1991.

History

Castagnola was first mentioned in 1335 as Castigniola. Archaeological finds from the Roman period indicate an earlier settlement. In the Middle Ages existed within the old church of San Giorgio a Castagnola, Ruvigliana and Suvigliana comprehensive neighborhood ( Concilium ).

The first time mentioned in 1335 as Casorago Cassarate was founded by the Bishop of Como and needed no taxes ( cassina ) deliver. It was connected to the Castle of San Michele. The part belonging to the castle place Burgus disintegrated at the end of the Middle Ages. After 1850 was Cassarate part of the infrastructure of Lugano and 1896 terminus of the tram line.

In the 20th century Castagnola became the largest residential and resort area in the vicinity of Lugano. It was developed in 1908 by the Funicular Funicular Monte Bre and 1955 by a trolleybus line.
