Castelló d'Empúries

Castelló d' Empúries is a medieval town in the Catalan province of Girona. It is located about 140 kilometers north of Barcelona on the Gulf of Roses, and is the former capital of the county Empúries. The town's landmark is the Basilica de Santa Maria, a Gothic church which was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. She is also known as the " Catedral de l' Empordà " or " Catedral de Castelló d' Empúries " even though they never had the status of a cathedral.

The municipality consists of two places:

  • Castelló d' Empuries, the "old town", with about 4000 inhabitants
  • Empuriabrava, the resort was founded in 1960 on the beach ( originally called Empuriabrava ). This urbanization is traversed 30 miles of canals, with about 7650 inhabitants.

About Regional importance enjoys multi-day medieval festival Terra de Troubadours, which should particularly note the old days when Castelló d' Empúries was the county town of Empúries.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms consists of a subject on the top square escutcheon and a hovering crown that is reminiscent of the former county of Empúries. The coat of arms shows the eponymous castle against a striped background colors in the Catalan.
