Sample

The song is based on a sample of the English Information and educational film Charly Says, an animated film that would like to teach children safety precautions in different situations. The text reads: "Charly says, always tell your mummy before you go off somewhere! " ( Charlie says always tell your mama tell you when you go outside ).

Liam Howlett was sued for the unauthorized use of samples, but ultimately won the lawsuit.

Effects

The single became a huge chart success and had a wave of rave productions result, which is also based on samples of various children's programs, such as the Smart E's Sesame 's Treet or with Urban Hype A Trip to Trumpton with. Having the dance magazine Mixmag accused the band before, with Charly the " nonsensical sampling phase in the history of dance music " ( " most insane sampling phase in the history of dance music" ) is triggered and a forerunner of a pop - oriented teenage raves to have become that would be contrary to the original underground rave culture.

Music Video

The music video, directed by Russell Curtis includes effects with typical rave Videos revised live recordings of the band and various scenes of the film Charley Says and was produced by Jill Mumford.
