Châteauneuf-les-Martigues

Châteauneuf -les -Martigues is a commune with 12,266 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Bouches -du -Rhône in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Châteauneuf -les -Martigues is located ten kilometers east of Martigues and 35 kilometers west of Marseilles. It is part of the Urban Community of Marseille Provence Métropole. The town lies on the Etang de Berre. The municipal area is the village of La Mède.

History

The earliest traces of human life go to the Mesolithic back (7000-6000 BC ). In the Neolithic people, agriculture and animal husbandry began to operate. In the local museum there is an ax of this era. Between 900 and 500 BC, the Celts settled here and established an oppidum. 125 BC, the Romans conquered the area. Between the 11th century and the French Revolution, the place was owned by many different men. Around the year 1000 a castle was built south of the village on the slopes. In 1972, she finally disappeared through the construction of a highway. In February 1790 Jean Guilet was the first elected mayor of the town.

Châteauneuf -les -Martigues has a driveway to the A55. This connects the place with Marseille.

Twinning

The town maintains since 2001 a city partnership with the Italian Valmadrera.
