Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu

The Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu (Latin: St. Peter cockcrow ) is located on the eastern slope of the Zionsbergs in Jerusalem, south of the old town. 1888 Assumptionistenpater discovered the remains of about 20 x 16 m large Byzantine church dating from the 6th century, which had been renewed by the Crusaders.

The present church was consecrated in 1931. The dome of the round church is a cross-shaped window. Mosaics show Jesus before the High Council, the weeping Peter and different Büßergestalten. It is reminiscent of Peter's denial after the arrest of Jesus ( Mt 26: 69-75 Lk 22, 56-62; Jn 18, 15-18.25-27 ).

Particularly noteworthy is the staircase that leads to the church of the valley. About this staircase probably went Jesus after the Last Supper to the Mount of Olives. He should have been discharged to the high priest's palace on the same staircase.
