Colin Webster

Colin Webster ( born July 17, 1932 in Cardiff, † March 1, 2001 in Swansea ) was a Welsh football player. The inside forward, who took part with the Welsh national team at the 1958 World Cup, won as " Busby Babe" with Manchester United once the league title in England.

Sports career

Webster began playing football at home in Cardiff. At Cardiff City, he did not make it past the reserve team because he worked full time as a mechanic. He had during his military service as a regular scorer hired when he scored 75 goals this season in the army.

In 1952, Webster joined Manchester United in the First Division, but came under manager Matt Busby in 1953 for an ailing Johnny Berry for his first league use. Had he briefly established in the forward line, Tommy Taylor ousted him back from his regular place. Nevertheless, he brought it in the season 1955/56, on the side of Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones, Dennis Viollet, Jackie Blanchflower, Bill Foulkes and David Pegg season with 15 inserts to sufficiently season games to get the official champion medal. In defense of the title in the following year his five stakes were too little. Nevertheless, it was first established in May 1957 in the Welsh national team. In the course of the season in 1957/58 once again an integral part of the team of Manchester United, prevented the flu its journey in February 1958 to the European Cup match in Belgrade, with its return flight, the aircraft crashed at Munich Airport. While after the deaths especially with young players, equipped team slipped in the league in the table, it nevertheless reached the final of the FA Cup. Had Webster scored in the quarter -final second leg match against West Bromwich Albion to win the game, scoring the 1-0 final score, he was also one of the eleven players in the final against Bolton Wanderers. However, two goals from Nat Lofthouse ended the dream of winning the title.

Webster then belonged to the squad of the Welsh national team, although he had not played since his debut in another international match. In the first two group games, he came under the Busby representative at Manchester United and simultaneously existent coach James Murphy to operations against Hungary and Mexico, but then lost his place in the storm. After the team had qualified after goals by Ivor Allchurch and Terry Medwin a 2-1 win against Hungary for the quarter-finals, he stood in for the injured John Charles back in the starting line-up. In the 0-1 defeat against Brazil he missed a hit and retired with the team from the tournament.

According to Webster's return to Old Trafford Busby sorted him out, because he wanted to develop a new team in the aftermath of the accident flight. For 7,500 pounds sterling, he moved to antretenden in English football club Swansea Town, for whom he in the next five years in the Second Division took second-rate. In 1963 he joined for 15 months the AFC Newport County and then left his career in non -League football finish.

After his career end Webster worked in scaffolding, before he earned his living as a park warden. After two years struggling with lung cancer, he died in March 2001 of the disease.
