Colosseum Theater

The Colosseum theater is an event hall ( until July 2010 pure musical theater ) in Essen West district. The Colosseum is the converted former 8 Mechanical workshop of Friedrich Krupp AG, a listed industrial building today. Since August 2010, the theater of the owners Stage Entertainment is rented out for various events.

History

Industrial use

The brick building was built in the years 1900 and 1901 at the eastern edge of the former Essen Krupp cast steel factory as a three-aisled hall industry. At that time it was called 8 Machine Shop and was the workplace of approximately 2,000 people who produced, among others, Lokomotiv frame and crankshafts for ships.

During World War II, this hall was, in contrast to most of the surrounding Krupp industrial buildings, not destroyed. However, Alfred Krupp was - stood as a monument in front of the 8th mechanical workshop, roughly where today the external staircase is - overthrown by bombs from its pedestal and is now in the possession of the Ruhr Museum. The monument at the entrance to the cast steel factory created the Munich sculptor Alois Mayer ( 1855-1936 ). It was unveiled in 1892 and contained on its pedestal the main idea of Alfred Krupp. He remembered him in 1873 to mark the 25th anniversary of his taking ownership of the cast steel factory by his mother Therese:

AEG Kanis later rented the workshop first and then became owner. Here, steam turbines, gas turbines built later only. In the years from 1983 to 1987 here the natural gas pipeline from Siberia to Western Europe was made. After shifting the company of AEG - Kanis in 1988, the building was in 1989 under monument protection. Use as event hall

In January 1993 it was decided at a kick-off workshop, the old industrial wasteland around the former factory building remodel to make the area more attractive for tourism and settle in new industries. In July 1994, a use concept was presented that provided for, among other things, to rebuild the old industrial building into a musical theater.

The old steel structure and glass roof in its original condition remained visible. In the hall, with its Art Nouveau elements of the stage tower was used. The auditorium was used as an independent structure integrated ( room within a room ), hinged galleries surround the 25 -meter-high foyer and aisles. Fly lofts and lighting bridges were inserted into the stage area and its historical elements and the 14 by 7 meters wide portal. The riveted steel beams and brickwork including truss structure were cleaned and sealed.

From 1996 to 2000 the theater of the Stella Entertainment AG was operated. In August 2000, after the bankruptcy Stella AG, the organizer Stage Entertainment took over the musical venue.

In February 2010 it was announced that after the end of the musical Buddy in July 2010, no further musicals longer be listed in the Colosseum Theater. Instead, the theater is rented since August 2010 by Stage Entertainment for press conferences, product presentations, symposia, conferences, festive events, award ceremonies and theater guest performances.

The background is that only the musical Elisabeth threw profit. All other presented at the Colosseum musicals played a less than cost of production.

The theater hall today offers over 1,400 seat auditorium, the foyer alone holds around 2,000 people. In addition, the studio theater, two galleries and a restaurant; all together a total area of ​​approximately 5,100 square meters. In the foyer, also exhibits contemporary painters and sculptors are exhibited.

Naming

The name Colosseum Theater to commemorate the same culture palace, which was 1899-1919 at the Essen Kopstadtplatz and represented a known variety show in the Rhineland and Westphalia.
