Community Identification Number#Switzerland

The community number (including code no., GEOSTAT no., Or BFS no. Called ) is one of the Swiss Federal Statistical Office ( FSO) with the official church directory first awarded in 1960 number which uniquely identify territorial units in the catchment area of Switzerland serves. The equivalent in Germany and Austria is called the municipality key.

General

The numbers are assigned according to the enumeration of the cantons in Article 1 of the Federal Constitution of the Swiss Confederation, within the cantons according to districts and further alphabetically by community name. Communities of cantons without districts were numbered consecutively. The community number is a number from one to four digits.

Exceptions to the rule indicate subsequent changes ( after 1986 ).

The community number is used not only as a key for all statistical analysis, but also for many other applications, eg in road of some cantons for the bridge designations.
