History

The origins of the university can be found in the Middle Ages, when King Sancho IV of Castile, the Studium Generale allowed in an educational institution of the Franciscans on May 20, 1293. In 1499 corresponded to Pope Alexander VI. the request of one of the former pupils, Cardinal Gonzalo Jiménez de Cisneros, to convert the General Studies in a university. This was called because originally the name of the city was Complutum Universitas Complutensis. She was also known as the University of Alcalá de Henares.

The city of Alcalá de Henares was completely re-scheduled as a unit with the university buildings to display as an original model of a Civitas Dei (City of God), the ideal city for the Spanish missionaries in America in reality. This should be the first concept of an ideal city.

Task of the new university, it should be according to de Cisneros, train competent clerics who should be a counter-movement to reformers. In addition, the mission of the university was to train new and knowledgeable imperial officials for the different kingdoms of Spain.

In 1836, the University was moved to the capital Madrid and renamed the Universidad Central. From 1857 they had the monopoly for the award doctorates in Spain. This monopoly ended in 1954, when the University of Salamanca their historical privilege to confer the title of Doctor regained. This eliminated the justification for the name " Central University " and the Universidad was renamed University of Madrid.

Due to the university and study reform of 1970, the University of Madrid was divided into two parts: the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and linguistics as well as the medical courses remained with the university, which was now called Universidad Complutense de Madrid, while the Centers for technical studies were grouped together with other institutions such as the army previous carrier or the Ministry of Industry in the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid ( technical University of Madrid ). In 1977, in a university Alcalá was re-opened, this was the name Alcalá University.
