The train route Copenhagen - Fredericia is a railway line in Denmark that connects Copenhagen with Fredericia in Jutland. The lying on section Zealand Copenhagen Korsør is also called Vestbanen, Denmark section Nyborg Fredericia is called the Fynske hovedbane. The track is expanded through double track up to the four-track section Hoje Taastrup Roskilde and electrified with 25 kV 50 Hz.

History

At the behest of industrialist Søren Hjorth and its accountants Peder Skram was awarded in 1844 the Copenhagen industry association, the concession to build a railway line from Copenhagen to Roskilde. On June 27, 1847 this line was opened as the first railway line in the area of present-day Denmark. On the territory of the former Kingdom of Denmark were at this time but already the Altona- Kiel railway and the railway lines Elmshorn - luck city and Neumünster -Flensburg.

Since the track was only quite short, the traffic is not developed initially by the expectation of the operator. It was but an extension of the route to Korsør announced, which was approved in 1852. On April 27, 1856, the extension Roskilde Korsør could be put into operation.

On the island of Funen, the railway Nyborg Middelfart was opened on September 7, 1865 by a private company. A year later, the route was extended to Strib. On September 1, 1867, all private railway lines on Funen and in Jutland, and thus the rail line Nyborg Strib, nationalized. They formed the basis of the newly established Danish State Railways.

This remained to be overcome of the Little Belt and the Great Belt to connect two networks route between Copenhagen and Jutland. For this, the train ferry Fredericia - Strib over the Little Belt by the DSB ( Danish State Railways ) was put into operation in March 1872. On 1 December 1883, ferry service between Nyborg and Korsør followed across the Great Belt.

Previously, the section Copenhagen Nyborg had been nationalized in 1880 and integrated into the DSB.

In 1935, the ferry service between Fredericia and Strib by a fixed crossing of the Little Belt was replaced. To this end, the Little Belt was opened. Since 1 June 1997, the ferry service across the Great Belt was unnecessary. The Great Belt is now crossed by the Great Belt rail tunnel and the Storebæltsbroen under - respectively. At the same time, the electrical operating between Copenhagen and Fredericia was taken.

Operation

The opening of the Great Belt crossing the entire freight traffic between Germany and Scandinavia shifted from the bird flight line on the connection via Fredericia. In the long-distance transport today EMUs IR 4 series are used. In freight transport, especially electric locomotives come the EC series 3100 used. There is also a daily pair of City Night Line overnight trains from Copenhagen to Amsterdam, Basel and Prague, respectively.
