CowParade

The CowParade is an international project for art in public space, which is based on the idea of the cow - culture in 1998 in Zurich.

The action " Land in sight - on to Zurich " is an initiative of the City Association Zurich, chose the concept of brightly painted cows by Walter Knapp from several proposals. This one had already known precursor in Zurich, where in 1986 brightly painted sculptures of lions ( lions are the heraldic animal of Zurich ) were set up in the city. Two years after the concept decision, the cows were then prepared and painted in 1998 under the artistic direction of Walter Knapp. Only in the course of action it got its used today and more grip names "Zurich cow culture." The concept was that several blanks were cast in fiberglass from one ordered from the zoo lifelike model and these blanks were sold to sponsors that they could then make freely. A total of 815 blanks were acquired from 395 sponsors and 400 artists, as well as entire school classes, these painted then. In the U.S., the businessman Peter Haning became interested in the idea and organized with City Councillor Lois Weisberg, the first " Cows On Parade" ( Parading cows) in Chicago in 1999. For the Swiss sculptor Pascal Knapp designed now three basic forms, whose 800 casts could then be designed. In Switzerland, the PR potential was recognized and the Swiss marketing company founded in 1999, the parade CowHolding AG, the idea was marketed internationally. An American competition founding, CowHolding Parade, the 2000 was also active in New York, was sued for injunctive relief.

After the show in New York in 2000, the idea was adapted in Berlin on the Buddy Bear. From this line grew a also internationally active Promotion Line of United Buddy Bears. Other major cities have the idea to other animals and actions taken, including the Munich Lions Parade 2005. Zurich in turn has the bears adapted as an art action and the " Teddy- Summer 2005 " 630 edited by artists and graphic designers Teddy objects in Zurich and at the airport Kloten erected.
