That's not the whole truth ... is the fourth studio album by the German punk rock band Die Ärzte and the last before their temporary resolution in 1988.

Formation

Production

The recordings for this is not the whole truth ... began in late 1987 in the Prussian recording studios in Berlin. Producer Uwe Hoffmann had already been on the albums Is that all? Ages 18 and cooperated. Manfred Praeker who produced the album The doctors, in turn, applied for the job as a producer, however, was rejected by the band. The album was mixed in Berlin's Hansa Studios.

A special feature of the production is that all the songs on the album by transitions, samples or the like are connected. The idea for this came from Farin Urlaub, who originally wanted to use already on the album The doctors these transitions, however, these steps did not prevail. The beginning of the album (consisting of a guitar chord, the question "Do you want hör'n the truth?" And follow the answer "No!" ) Comes from the beginning of a true produced, but not published in full length song called "Girls ... ".

Hagen Liebing - actually bass player at the doctors - played on the album, not the bass, but Farin Urlaub. Liebing was not involved in the entire production. Although offered Farin Urlaub and Bela B. to him that he should bring her own compositions; then a written work he was rejected from producer Uwe Hoffmann.

" Elke"

A special feature was the production of the song " Elke". The song was only spontaneously during studio work on the album. Triggers were numerous calls of two female fans named Elke and Daniela, who had found out directly to the recording studio the number. The band felt very disturbed and Farin Urlaub threatened the callers that he would be the next call to write a song about the two, after which they called once again of the calls. Elke and Daniela had already sent photos of herself with the fan mail to the doctors and it reveals that both are very overweight, giving a starting point for the content of the song Elke afforded, the extensive and highly exaggerated deals with the preponderance of Elke. The song " Elke" developed after the publication quickly becoming one of the songs most frequently the band plays live. Even into the 2006 counted " Elke" for solid live repertoire of the band. In 1999, the song was also released in a live version on a single.

Music style

The album offers a wide range of different musical genres. Overall dominated the punk (especially in " Elke", but also " aliens " or " Without you " ), but interpret the doctors on the album for her unusual musical styles that to synth pop ( " Please, please " ) or surf music (" Westerland " ) remember. The lyrics are ridicule and sarcasm in the foreground. Among other things, overweight ( " Elke" ), vegetarianism ( " Flowers" ), BDSM ( " Please, please " ) or the abduction of their own girlfriend by aliens ( "Alien" ) processes.

Trivial

  • The title of the album "That's not the whole truth ... " comes from a quote by William Shatner in the movie The Incredible Journey in a crazy spaceship back, the doctors felt particularly absurd.
  • The cover photo was made by Jim rocket and was at the Berlin Wittenberg Platz. For the photo around a dozen models was hired, who were paid for their work with boards and T -shirts.
  • The song " I ess ' Flowers" came about after someone tried to convince Farin assume that feces of vegetarians does not smell, but smells. Bela B. thought the story was so original that he wrote a song about vegetarians. Farin Urlaub, however, was from this time Pescetarier.
  • The unintelligible grumbling at the end of the song " Please, please, " comes from a sample from the end of the song " I'm So Tired " by the Beatles. It was Ringo Starr, who gave the unintelligible grumbling from him.
  • The last song, which is not mentioned on the cover and can thus be viewed as a hidden track, is generally referred to as " feminine ". On the official website of the band the song is however titled as " tail off ".
  • The riff of the song "Baby, I 'll do it " is based on the Judas Priest song "Breaking The Law".
