David Darling (musician)

David Darling ( born March 3, 1941 in Elkhart, Indiana) is an American cellist in the range between jazz, classical and improvised music.

Darling had from the age of four years of piano lessons and began ten years on the cello. At Indiana University, he studied classical cello. After musical studies he worked 1966-1969 as a teacher in primary and secondary sector. 1969 and 1979 he taught at Western Kentucky University Music Education and was the conductor of the University Orchestra. He then worked from 1970 to 1978 with the Paul Winter Consort and took in this period albums under his own name. Then he concentrated on composing strong; He worked especially for the Symphony Orchestra of Indianapolis and Cincinnati.

Darling has worked with Spyro Gyra, Peter, Paul and Mary, Oregon, Bobby McFerrin, Eddie Gomez, Terje Rypdal, Pierre Favre and the dance ensemble Pilololus. In addition, he has created film music, among other things, to Far Side of the World and Faraway, So Close! by Wim Wenders. In 1986 he was a founder of Music for People, a nonprofit organization that promotes improvisation as a means of self-expression.

Besides the traditional cello Darling also uses a building designed by him, achtsaitiges instrument with solid body, which is amplified and its sound can be edited in various ways, for example with ring modulator, Echoplex or fuzz box.

For his album Cello Blue Darling was nominated for a Grammy in 2002. He won the 2010 award in the category of Best New Age Album for Prayer For Compassion.
