De Havilland Canada DHC-4 Caribou

The de Havilland Canada DHC -4 Caribou was designed as a short takeoff and landing -capable transport aircraft at de Havilland Canada. The first flight took place in July 1958. Overall, 307 aircraft were built, of which 159 were machines to the U.S. Army. The aircraft was exported to many countries and sold to military and civilian users.

Construction

The aircraft was designed as a high-wing monoplane with a positive dihedral of the wings. As engines were two Pratt and Whitney R-2000 - 7M2 with 1,450 hp ( 1,081 kW).

A special feature of this type of aircraft is that it is possible to set full flaps, set up exclusively with the nose wheel without the main gear gets contact with the ground.

Use

The U.S. Army was supplied from 1961 with the CV-2 Caribou. The machine has been used, for example in the Vietnam War. 1967 DHC -4 Caribou were all transferred from the U.S. Army to the U.S. Air Force. In return, the U.S. Army was able to expand its helicopter activities.

The Royal Australian Air Force was the last user of the Caribou, the last machines were in service until the end of 2009 at the 38th Squadron based at RAAF Base Townsville. Two machines will be exhibited in Australia, the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and the Museum of the RAAF at Point Cook south-west of Melbourne.
