Deborah Turbeville

Deborah Turbeville ( born July 6, 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts, † October 24, 2013 in Manhattan, New York) was an American photographer.

Life and work

Turbeville was born in Boston. She grew up in England and went at the age of 20 years to New York. There she worked as an assistant and model for fashion designer Claire McCardell, by which they came into contact with Diana Vreeland. Since then photographed Turbeville. In 1963 she was hired as an editor and fashion photographer at Harper 's Bazaar and worked with Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon and Hiro before 1972 completely dedicated to photography. In 1977 she exhibited at documenta 6 in Kassel. She lived in Mexico, New York, Paris and St. Petersburg.

In 2005 she taught at the Smolny Institute on behalf of Bard College. As a photographer Turbeville worked for the fashion designer Bergdorf Goodman, Oscar de la Renta, Valentino Garavani and Vera Wang. Her photographs have been shown in galleries and museums and published in the magazines L' uomo, Vogue, Casa Vogue, Acne Paper, V Magazine and W Magazine. For The New York Times Magazine, she photographed a series of portraits of Julia Roberts.

  • In 2002 she got a scholarship from the Fulbright program for the Baltic School of Photography in St. Petersburg
