Den Helder–Amsterdam railway

The railway line Nieuwediep Amsterdam, also Staatslijn K, is a railway line between Amsterdam and Den Helder in the Netherlands. It is the most important railway line in the northern part of North Holland. It connects the cities of Den Helder, Alkmaar, Uitgeest and Zaanstad with Amsterdam. The distance is about 81 kilometers.

History

The first section of the route, between Den Helder and Alkmaar, was opened on 18 December 1865. On May 1, 1867 second section between Alkmaar and Uitgeest was inaugurated. On November 1, 1869, the section between Uitgeest and Zaandam followed. The next part of the route was opened eight years later. For the section between Zaandam and Amsterdam, had an elaborate bridge construction over the North Sea Canal to be built, which prevented an earlier opening of this section. In 1983, then, the bridge was demolished in favor of a new three-track railway tunnel. The electrification with the usual at this time of 1,500 volts DC took place on the piece from Amsterdam to Alkmaar 1931. The section between Alkmaar and Den Helder received in 1958 electric overhead lines. The maximum line speed is 140 km / h On the section between Amsterdam and Alkmaar to just behind, but is only driven up to 130 km / hr. The track is a three-pronged between Amsterdam Centraal and Zaandam. From Zaandam she runs two tracks on up to Schagen and from there it runs only one track to the terminus in Den Helder.
