German Kreutz (Hungarian Sopronkeresztúr until 1899 Németkeresztúr; Croatian: Kerestur; Hebrew: Tzelem ) is a market town in the district Oberpullendorf in Burgenland in Austria with 3093 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

Geography

The municipality is located in Central Burgenland. Neighboring municipalities are Horitschon and Teasing market, Unterpetersdorf and Nikitsch ( Croatian community ).

History

Before Christ's birth, the area was part of the Celtic kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the area of the Celtic hillfort castle on the Schwarzenbacher Castle Hill. Later in the Roman Empire the area was part of the province Pannonia.

Market town is German Kreutz since 1340. The place was like the entire Burgenland ( German West Hungary ) to 1920/21 to Hungary. After the end of World War II German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 Austria after tough negotiations. The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ).

Jewish Community

From 1671 German Kreutz was one of the seven Jewish communities in Burgenland. The Orthodox Jewish community maintained a famous Talmudic college, studying in the Jews from all over the world. Due to the global importance for Judaism, German Kreutz also leads a Hebrew place names ( Tzelem = view within the meaning of idol ). This is also the case within Austria only for Eisenstadt ( Asch ). The church grew in the 19th century to much and counted in 1857 1230 people. 1941, the Synagogue of German Kreutz was blown up by the Nazis.

Culture and sights

  • Castle Kreutz German: Schloss German Kreutz, a mighty Renaissance castle from a four-wing building with corner towers and two-storey court arcades since 1966 is privately owned by the artist Anton Lehmden, which has since restored the building and shows a painting exhibition in the castle.

Mayor is Manfred Kölly ( LBL). After the separation of the FPÖ and BZÖ Kölly was the only Burgenland FPÖ mayor for a short time until he founded his own civil list after his expulsion from the party.

Economy

German Kreutz, together with the communities Großwarasdorf, Horitschon, Lutzmannsburg, Raiding, Unterpetersdorf and Neckenmarkt the Blaufränkischland, the most famous wine region in the otherwise rather white wine embossed Austria, whose history dates back to Celtic times. The Blaufränkische is deep dark ruby - colored and exceptionally fruity in this area. Very often he is aged in oak barrels and has a very good shelf life. The vineyards of Blaufränkischland extend from the southern slopes of the Sopron Mountains to Günser Bergland. To the east opens the Hungarian Plain. This makes the Pannonian influence, which is necessary for the maturation of the grapes fully effective and the predominantly loamy soil offers plus the ideal conditions. It is grown next to the blue Franconian also Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zweigelt.

The municipal area of German Kreutz is also the mineral water source Juvina. Even the Romans knew these mineral water source that is older than the wine cultivation in the region.

Traffic

German Kreutz is located on the Burgenlandbahn as well as at the German Kreutzer Road ( B 62), which connects the Hungarian Sopron with the Burgenland Expressway ( S31).

The border crossing at the B62 was up to the accession of Hungary to the European Union on 1 May 2004, the northern border crossing for cross -border freight traffic south of Lake Neusiedl for trucks from countries other than Austria and Hungary.
