Dexys Midnight Runners

Dexys Midnight Runners ( currently only " Dexys " ) are a British band that plays a blend of New Wave, Northern Soul and Celtic folk and had their greatest successes have been achieved in the early 1980s.

Band History

Kevin Rowland (vocals, guitar) and Kevin " Al " Archer ( vocals, guitar) formed the band in 1978 in Birmingham. In the original cast of "Big" Jim Paterson (trombone), Geoff " JB " Blythe (saxophone ), Steve " Babyface " Spooner ( alto saxophone ), Pete Saunders (keyboard), Pete Williams ( bass) and Bobby " Jnr " Ward ( drums), the band recorded in 1979 their first single Dance Stance on. While this piece only reached number 40 in the British charts, the second single Geno, a song about Geno Washington, 1980, a number 1 on the recording was had the new band members Andy Leek (keyboards ) and Andy " Stoker " Growcott (drums) with.

The first album Searching for the Young Soul Rebels 1980 was a great success - the band had the recordings unceremoniously stolen to negotiate better financial terms. After the next single There There My Dear was a hit again, by the piece sat Rowland Keep It, Part Two for the next single, which flopped then. Subsequently, most of the musicians left the band because they otherwise had difficulty with Rowlands autocratic nature. Archer formed The Blue Ox Babes, and Blythe, Spooner, Williams, Stoker and Mick Talbot (ex -Merton Parkas, who had recently encountered this) formed The Bureau.

Paterson stayed with Rowland, newly arrived Billy Adams (guitar, banjo), Seb Shelton (drums, formerly Secret Affair ), Micky Billingham (keyboards), Brian Maurice ( alto saxophone ), Paul Speare (tenor saxophone) and Steve Wynne ( bass). They brought out in 1981 the singles Plan B, Show Me and Liars A to E, all of which were very successful.

Rowland made then input the string section " The Emerald Express ", consisting of Helen O'Hara (from the Blue Ox Babes ), Steve Brennan and Roger MacDuff. With new bassist Giorgio Kilkenny the Dexys 1982 Too - Rye -Ay took up, a mix of Celtic folk and soul. The strong influence of Van Morrison to Dexys Midnight Runners was on this album clearly audible. The first single The Celtic Soul Brothers was a moderate success, but the next Come On Eileen was number one both in the UK and in America. With the next singles Jackie Wilson Said ( I'm In Heaven When You Smile), the cover version of Van Morrison - piece, and Let's Get This Straight ( From The Start), the group remained on the wave of success.

As the wind felt disadvantaged by the strings, Paterson, Speare and Maurice left the band and formed The TKO Horns. Johnny Edwards Kilkenny replaced on bass and Billingham went to General Public. By 1983, Dexys were on tour, and then take a two year break.

1985 brought the band a new album on the market, Do not Stand Me Down. The cast was now Rowland, Adams, O'Hara and Nicky Gatfield together with guest musicians, including Vincent Crane ( ex - Atomic Rooster ), Julian Littman and Tim Dancy ( who had played with Al Green drums ). First Rowland wanted to decouple no single; When this finally happened yet, it was too late, the album flopped.

After one last minor hit with Because of You to Dexys Midnight Runners broke in on it. Rowland began a little acclaimed solo career. In the 1990s, he planned with Big Jim Paterson a revitalization of the band, but more than one television appearance in 1993 did not materialize for the time being.

In April 2003, Dexys of Rowland has been compiled on a tour again. The band released in September 2003, the much acclaimed " Best Of" Let's Make This Precious plate.

In the BBC Rowland said in an interview in June 2005 that the group Dexys Midnight Runners had again come together in the studio recording a new album. In June 2012, the album One Day I'm Going To Soar appeared under the band name Dexys.

Band name

The band is named after the drug dextromethorphan, a popular in the former scene stimulants. Nevertheless, we often come to the wrong band name " Dexy 's Midnight Runners " - Dexys in this case is not the English genitive form ( such as in " Herb Alpert 's Tijuana Brass", where the Tijuana Brass Band of the person Herb Alpert is associated ). Nevertheless, finds himself increasingly these faulty primed notation, even the CD release of the 1982 album " Too - Rye -Ay " is printed in accordance false; The cover, however, is of course still correct since taken over from the original LP.
