The Detroit Red Wings selected him then in the NHL Entry Draft in 2006 in the second round at position 62. And even in his native Sweden, people became aware of him, so he took from the high-class Djurgårdens IF Elitserien under contract. However, his contract expired at Huddinge IK to 2007, which led to clashes between the two teams. Axelsson versa finally two months after the start of the season to Huddinge, where he scored 21 points scorer in 25 games.

In the summer of 2007 when his contract expired, he finally moved to Djurgårdens IF and played a good debut season with twelve goals and 13 assists in the Elitserien, which is why he was called to the end of the season in the squad of the Swedish national team for the World Cup. But in April 2008 there was a dispute between Axelsson and the police, and he had to spend a night in jail. Coach Bengt -Åke Gustafsson stroked him then before the start of the tournament from the squad.

Instead, he played in June 2008 for Sweden at the Inline Hockey World Championship, led the team with nine goals and seven assists in six games to win the gold medal and was even voted the most valuable player of the tournament.

At the beginning of the season 2008/09 Axelsson injured already in the second season game collarbone and dropped out a long time. After his return he could build on the achievements of the previous year and scored 12 points in 18 games, but in mid-December 2008 was transferred from Djurgården to league rivals Färjestad BK after the sporting management was unhappy with the work ethic and discipline of Axelsson. In Färjestad he continued his productive season with 18 points away in the last 21 games. In the playoffs, he injured his hand, returned in the final of the Swedish championship back in the team back and eventually won the title. Shortly thereafter, he received a sample contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the farm team of Detroit from the AHL, but returned before the end of the season and without an insert back to Sweden, as his hand injury was not auskurriert.

In autumn 2009, Axelsson finally made his debut in North America and left a good first impression with a goal and an assist in his AHL debut game. This power he was able to confirm in the following games before an injury put him out of action for a few games and then greatly decreased its shape. Mid -November, Axelsson that he wants to return to Sweden, but what the management of the Red Wings refused. After another weak play Axelsson was the middle of December finally returned to Sweden, where he participated in over Christmas at the training camp of his former teams Färjestad BK. But a play for the Elitserien still depended on the consent of the Detroit Red Wings, they finally issued a month later. In May 2011, Axelsson has been committed by MODO Hockey, after he had won in the previous season with Färjestad BK for the second time in his career, the Swedish Championship and All-Star team the Elitserien had been elected.

Dick Axelsson, who signed an entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the summer of 2008, is considered as an intelligent striker with a powerful shot that also can play physically hard. In addition, he is a fast skater. However, he needs to show more consistent performance and avoid undisciplined actions to no longer collect unnecessary penalty minutes.

At the World Championships in 2013 in Stockholm and Helsinki, he was again part of the national team and won the gold medal with this.
