Diego Roberto Leal Godin, Diego Godin short (* February 16, 1986 in Rosario ) is an Uruguayan footballer who plays in La Liga with Atlético Madrid.

Godin began his footballing career in his hometown of Estudiantes de Rosario. Then he played in the youth teams of Defensor Sporting. From there he moved to Club Atlético Cerro, where he made his debut soon in the highest Uruguayan league. For the club he played - initially as a striker, and later as a central defender - from 2003 up to and including season 2005/06. During this time, for him 39 games ( five goals) in the Primera División in 2003, 2004 and 2005 /06 occupied. In 2006 he was hired by the League rivals Nacional Montevideo. The Bolsos he came in the 2006 / 07 26 times in the top division for use (no gate).
After his strong performance in the Uruguayan league and the Copa Libertadores, he came before the 2007/2008 season for Villarreal as a substitute for the Argentine Roberto Ayala, who had opted for a move to Real Zaragoza. In the three years in the " yellow submarine " he brought it to 91 appearances in the Primera División and met four times to the opponent's goal net.
For the 2010/11 season he was transferred for a fee of about € 8 million to Atlético Madrid. Godin wrote under the capital club a contract for five years. In August 2010, he was able to celebrate the victory in the UEFA Super Cup, his first title victory with Atlético. It was followed by 2011/12 triumph in the UEFA Europa League. In the 2012/13 season he won with his teammates at the start of the UEFA Super Cup in 2012 and later the Copa del Rey.
For the people of Madrid, he completed in his first three seasons, 87 games in the Liga BBVA and scored three goals.
In May 2013, the European press knew of an existing interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester City to report on the commitment of the Uruguayan. However, Godin remained with the people of Madrid and completed in the current season 2013/14 until his last mission provisionally on March 2, 2014 24 more league games ( two goals) and was four times in the Champions League on the pitch (one goal ).
National
On 26 October 2005 Diego Godin made his debut in the Uruguayan national team in a friendly match against Mexico. He took also of the Copa America 2007 in part as well as three years later at the World Cup. In the 2010 World Cup, he reached the fourth place as a regular player with Uruguay. In 2011 he won with the national team in the Copa América 2011. He also worked at the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013. Godin graduated so far 76 caps, scoring three goals. His last assignment provisionally dated March 5, 2014.
