Dietmar Thöni

Dietmar Thöni (born 19 January 1968 in Leins, community Arzl ) is a former Austrian alpine skier. His strongest disciplines were the slalom and Super -G. Thöni reached the podium in the World Cup and a victory in the European Cup. He was Austrian Champion in the combination in 1993.

Career

After several victories in FIS races Thöni was included in the squad of the Austrian Ski Federation in 1986. In the European Cup, he was initially successful in the Super -G and he was able to improve over the years up to third place in the discipline rating of the season 1989/90. The following winter Thöni was then the best slalom skier in the overall standings and he finished in fourth place. In the 1991/92 season of the Super -G was his strongest discipline again. The Tyrolean celebrated in Kvitfjell his first and only European Cup victory and finished second in the discipline rating again third.

Due to its performance in the European Cup came Thöni beginning of the 1990s also to his first World Cup inserts and he went at least once already in the top 20 The amendment of the regulations, which from the 1991/92 season the top 30 runners, instead of as before only received the best 15 World Cup points, Thöni brought on 30 November 1991 with rank 23 in the slalom in Breckenridge his first points. At the beginning of the 1992/93 season he came up with eighth in slalom in Val d'Isere for the first time in the top ten. However, in the rest of the season he was never better than 15th before he surprisingly took third place on 21 March 1993 in the Super- G Kvitfjell and therefore his best World Cup result ever achieved.

The following winter Thöni met five times in the slalom at the fastest 15 His best result was the ninth place in Kranjska Gora. In the super -G, he came only ranked 18 in Val d'Isere. In early February Thöni injured difficult and he had to end the season prematurely. In the next few seasons of the Tyrolean launched only in slalom, but he had to contend with increased precipitation and increasingly caused him the injured knee problems. In the winter of 1994/95, his best result was the tenth place at Ganslernhang in Kitzbühel. The following year he came ever to the finish only twice - as 15th in Madonna di Campiglio and 13th in Flachau. After the 1995/96 season Thöni decided to have an operation on battered knees and he retired from professional racing.

Today Thöni has worked as a coach and he has in his hometown a Holiday Inn.
