Don Ashby

Allan Donald "Don" Ashby ( born March 8, 1955 in Kamloops, British Columbia; † 30 May 1981 in Kelowna, British Columbia) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who from 1975 to 1981 for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies and Edmonton Oilers has played in the National Hockey League.

Career

Don Ashby began his career as a hockey player with the Kamloops Rockets, where he was active in the 1971/72 season in the British Columbia Hockey League. After three years at the Calgary Centennials of the Western Hockey League, the attacker in the NHL Amateur Draft was selected in the first round as the sixth player overall in 1975 by the Toronto Maple Leafs. In his first season in the National Hockey League came Ashby on 50 missions, where he scored 21 scorer points, including six goals. In his four years in Toronto, the Canadian also played regularly for their respective farm teams. Oklahoma City Blazers and the Dallas Black Hawks of the Central Hockey League, and finally the New Brunswick Hawks of the American Hockey League

March 13, 1979 Ashby was given together with Trevor Johansen in exchange for Paul Gardner to the Colorado Rockies. By the end of the 1978/79 season Ashby was still in eleven games for the Rockies on the ice, while in the following season mainly for their farm team of the Central Hockey League, the Fort Worth Texans played. For this reason, Ashby was issued on February 25, 1980 by Colorado in exchange for Bobby Schmautz to the Edmonton Oilers.

Also from Edmonton Ashby was used only sporadically, so it winds from the Central Hockey League was active most of the 1980/81 season for their farm team in Wichita, with whom he reached the final of the Adams Cup, but in seven games to the Salt Lake Golden Eagles defeated. On the way back from the last final game came Ashby and his wife in a traffic accident, in the hospital died from the consequences of Canadians later at the age of 26 years.
