Douglas Wakiihuri

Douglas Wakiihuri ( born September 26, 1963 in Mombasa ) is a former Kenyan long-distance runner.

In 1983, Wakiihuri to Japan and was trained by Kyoshi Nakamura, who also oversaw Toshihiko Seko.

He won at the 1987 World Championships in Rome the title in the marathon with a time of 2:11:48. This was the first title in this distance for Kenyan men at the World Championships or Olympic Games and was the only way to victory by Luke Kibet at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka. At the Olympic Summer Games in Seoul in 1988 he won behind Gelindo Bordin in the marathon silver medal.

Further victories he won the 1989 London Marathon in his personal best time of 2:09:03 and 1990 at the New York City Marathon.

Douglas Wakiihura today conducting safaris for Japanese tourists and started a career as a musician with CD releases in his home country and Japan.
