Ekarma

Ekarma (Russian Экарма, Japanese越 渇 磨 岛, Ekaruma -tō ) is a volcanic island in the Russian Kuril Islands. Ekarma between Schiaschkotan and Tschirinkotan. From the southeastern island Schiaschkotan it is separated by the 8.5 kilometers wide Ekarma Street. About 30 kilometers west of Ekarma is Tschirinkotan.

The island represents the projecting over the sea part of two coalesced volcanoes layer; they do has an area of ​​7.5 × 5 km with an area of ​​30 km ². The western summit reaches a height of 1170 meters.

The western volcano has been active in historical time. During an outbreak, 1767-1769, a new lava dome was formed. According to a 1980 eruption of the volcano became active again in 2010. It came from a column on the southwestern slope of steam and ash; also be formed lahars.

Ekarma belongs politically to the Sakhalin Oblast of the Russian Federation.
