Emperor Lizong of Song

Lizong (Chinese理宗, Pinyin Lǐzōng; * 1205, † 1264 ) was the 14th emperor of the Song Dynasty, and thus the fifth emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty. He ruled the Empire of China from 1224 to 1264.

To his reign in 1234 succeeded the Mongols conquer the north adjacent Jin Empire. The practical state steering left Lizong the conductive Chancellor Jia Sidao. He was depicted in literature and historiography as mischievous person. The reason for this probably lies in its economic policy: tax evasion and high inflation ( Papiergeld! ), to the war against the Mongols overwhelmed the state coffers.

1259 forced the Mongols, the Southern Song north of the Yangtze River cede all land. 1263/64 step Jia for expropriation of many landowners. That was mainly larger goods, a third of which had to be forcibly sold to the state. Thus came about one fifth of the land in state ownership.

But the Mongols under Kublai Khan united, were therefore unstoppable. Until 1279 they eventually conquered all of China.

Lizong died childless and was succeeded on the throne by his nephew Duzong.
