Erik Rasmussen (ice hockey)

Erik Rasmussen ( born March 28, 1977 in St. Louis Park, Minnesota ) is a retired American professional ice hockey player. During his active career 1995-2009 he played for the Buffalo Sabres, Los Angeles Kings and New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League on the position of the center.

Career

Erik Rasmussen played from 1995 to 1997 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association ( WCHA ) for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the team from the University of Minnesota. In 1996, the team won the WCHA Championship. Rasmussen scoring in 40 games 48 points scorer and was selected following the 1995/96 season in the WCHA All- Rookie Team. A little later he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1996 in the first round to seventh position overall by the Buffalo Sabres. After another season in the WCHA he spent two years playing for both the Sabres in the National Hockey League, as well as their farm team in Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League.

In the NHL season 1998/99 he reached with the Buffalo Sabres the final of the Stanley Cup, which lost the Sabres against the Dallas Stars. On 24 July 2002 Rasmussen was transferred to the Los Angeles Kings. Buffalo received in return the player Adam Mair and a fifth- round option for the NHL Entry Draft in 2003. According to an era marked by injuries to start the season, the center of the season 2003 /04 was committed by the New Jersey Devils.

After three seasons with the Devils and another season in the American Hockey League for their farm team, the Americans moved in the Finnish SM- liiga to porin Ässät. Erik Rasmussen graduated in the 2008 /09 season still 31 games for the team from the south-western Finland and ended with the conclusion of his career.

Internationally

Rasmussen represented his country with the U.S. national team for the first time at the Junior World Championships in 1996, where he remained with his team without a medal success. At the Junior World Cup in the following year, the Americans occupied the second place after the team lost the final game against the Canadian national team 2-0. Rasmussen was there behind Mike York second most successful points scorer of the U.S. selection.

His first and only application for the men's team had the center at the 2002 World Cup, when the Americans defeated in the quarterfinals of the Finnish national team.
