Estonian parliamentary election, 1926

The Estonian parliamentary election in 1926 was held from 17 May 15. It was the election to the third term of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) after the adoption of the Estonian Constitution of 1920.

Reform of the electoral law

The 100 deputies were elected by proportional representation for a term of three years. Provided by the parties on the electoral lists for the ten constituencies. The same candidates could run in several constituencies. The seat is allocated by D' Hondt method.

As a result of the general election in 1923, which had sided with 26 parties and groups to select and fourteen the collection made ​​it into parliament, the electoral law was amended in February 1926. Consolidation of the party system

In 1925, also the Estonian party system was further consolidated. The Socialist Estonian Social Democratic Workers' Party ( Eesti Sotsiaaldemokraatiline Tööliste Party) united in April 1925, parts of the left-wing Socialist Independent Socialist Workers' Party ( Iseseisev Sotsialistlik Tööliste party ) to Estonian Socialist Workers' Party ( Eesti Sotsialistlik Tööliste party). On June 5, 1925, the two groups merged in Parliament. The remaining grouping of left-wing socialists ran in 1926 under the name of Estonian Workers' Party ( Eesti Tööliste party). She received six seats in the new parliament.

Election result

The suffrage amendment demonstrated the desired effect: On the choice was attended only 14 parties. Of these, ten managed to win a seat in parliament.

No new party moved into the Parliament. The war veterans who had in 1923 received only 1.2 % of the vote and one seat in parliament, did not recur on. The National Liberal Party ( Rahvuslik - Vabameelne Party), which had been represented by four deputies, missed to enter parliament. The Communists were no longer represented in the new Parliament you had lost their legitimacy in the democratic system in Estonia since the attempted coup of 1 December 1924.

Winner of the election was the social democratic Estonian Socialist Workers' Party ( Eesti Sotsialistlik Tööliste Party), which was the strongest party with 24 MPs. Government formation
