Euphemia of Masovia

Eufemia (also Ofka; * to 1395/1398, † before September 17, 1447 ) was Princess of Mazovia and Duchess of Teschen, over which they exercised the regency from 1431 to 1442.

Life

Euphemia was the daughter of the Duke Ziemowit IV of Masovia and Alexandra of Lithuania († 1434 ), a sister of the Polish king Władysław II Jagiello. 1412 married the widowed Duke of Teschen Boleslaw I. The marriage came from the sons

  • Wenceslas I († 1474 ) ∞ with Elisabeth von Brandenburg
  • Wladislaus († 1460 ) ∞ with Margareta of Celje
  • Przemislaus II († 1477 ) ∞ with Anna of Mazovia
  • Boleslaw II († 1474 ) ∞ with Anna Bielsko († 1448 ), daughter of the Moscow Province Governor Fyodor Bielski

And the daughter

  • Alexandra († 1463 ) ∞ with the Palatine László Garai II († 1459 )

After the death of Duke Boleslaw I. the four sons inherited his possession. Since they were not yet of age, Eufemia took over the guardianship of it, and to 1442 the regency over the Duchy. Along with her sons, she gave in 1438 the city of Cieszyn mint money. Only in 1442 the inheritance was divided. By thus resulting small dominions Boleslaw lost sons in political importance. In addition, it already came a year after the division of an estate to a loss of territory, because Eufemias eldest son Wenceslas I. the duchy Sewerien 1443 sold to the Bishop of Cracow, Zbigniew Oleśnicki.

Presumably, Eufemia was buried beside her husband in the monastery church of the Dominicans in Cieszyn.
