Bolesław I, Duke of Cieszyn

Bolesław I of Cieszyn ( Czech Boleslav I. Těšínský, Polish Bolesław I cieszyński; * after 1363, † May 6, 1431 ) was from 1410 to 1431 Duke of Teschen, 1410-1414 Duke of Auschwitz, 1410-1431 Duke of Glogau half. He came from the Teschen branch of the Silesian Piast dynasty.

Origin and family

His parents were Duke Przemislaus and Elisabeth ( † 1373 ), daughter of Duke Bolesław of Bytom. 1406 he married Margaret († 1407), daughter of Duke Johann I Opava, who died a year later. His second wife married Boleslaw Euphemia († 1447 ), daughter of the Duke of Mazovia Siemowit IV. This couple had children:

  • Wenceslas I († 1474 ) ∞ 1438/39 Elisabeth ( † 1439), daughter of the Elector Frederick I of Brandenburg.
  • Wladislaus († 1460 ) ∞ 1444 Margareta of Celje
  • Przemislaus II († 1477 ) ∞ 1460/68 Anna of Mazovia
  • Boleslaw II († 1474 ) ∞ 1448 Anna Bielsko († 1490 ), daughter of the Moscow Province Governor Fyodor Bielski
  • Alexandra († 1463 ) ∞ the Hungarian magnates László Garai II († 1459 )

Life

After the death of his father in 1410, inherited the second-born Boleslaw Cieszyn and half of Glogau with Gohrau and Bytom and Sewerien. Since his older brother Przemislaus of Auschwitz was no longer alive when her father died, sat Boleslaw Teschen main line continues. For even minor son of his elder brother Przemislaus Casimir I of Auschwitz (1396-1434) he took over the guardianship and managed the Duchy of Auschwitz until 1414. During the same year he fought on the side of the Polish king against the Teutonic Knights. In a further division in 1416, he transferred to his nephew Casimir still Tost, half Gliwice and chasing.

Although Boleslaw was on the side of King Sigismund, he turned not targeted against the Hussites, however, concluded in 1428 an agreement with them. This is probably why the Duchy of Teschen was spared during the Hussite Wars.

After Boleslaw 's death in 1431 his widow Euphemia took over the guardianship of the not yet of legal age sons. Then the sons managed the property with her mother. In 1438 they gave the city the privilege of Teschen Münzprägens. Only in 1442 the inheritance was divided. By thus resulting small dominions Boleslaw lost sons in political importance.
