Wenceslaus I, Duke of Cieszyn

Wenzel I von Teschen (Czech: Václav I. Těšínský, Polish: Waclaw I cieszyński; * 1413, † 1474 in Bielsko ) was Duke of Teschen 1431-1442, 1442-1443 Duke of Sewerien, 1442-1474 Duke of Bielsko and 1452 -1459 Duke of Bytom half.

Life

Wenzel came from the Teschen branch of the Silesian Piast dynasty. His parents were Boleslaw I. and Eufemia († 1447 ).

After the death of her father in 1431 Wenzel and his younger brothers Wladislaus, Primislaus II and Boleslaw II inherited his possessions. Since they had not yet reached the age of majority, they were initially under the tutelage of her mother, who exercised the regency to 1442. The position of the Dukes of Teschen was weakened by the distribution of the property took place in 1442. Wenzel received the area of Bielsko, after he had been titled Duke of Bielsko and where he resided until his death. At the same time the Duchy Sewerien was conferred on him, which he, however, only a year later sold to the Bishop of Cracow, Zbigniew Oleśnicki. This led to further hostilities on the border between Poland and the eastern Silesia, which could be completed only in 1453.

When he assumed the guardianship of Boleslaw ' only son, Casimir II, which he held until his death in 1774. As Wenzel left no descendants, the Duchy of Bielsko was reunited after his death in 1774 the Duchy of Cieszyn. His body was interred in the church of the Dominican monastery in Cieszyn.

Wenzel was since February 17, 1439 the widow of the Duke of Legnica Ludwig II († 1436 ), Elizabeth of Brandenburg, married. The marriage, which was childless, was solved 1445-1446 for unknown reasons.
