History

The total of 216 acres of exhibition space in the world exhibition of 1900 were distributed almost equally between the Champ de Mars, the Esplanade des Invalides and the adjoining banks of the Seine (112 acres ) on the one hand and on the other hand, the Bois de Vincennes (104 hectares). The show was so about ten times as large as the first Paris Exposition of 1855. Overall, 76 112 exhibitors were present.

At the height of the Belle Époque, the official exhibition motto was " balance of a century." As built heritage, the exhibition has mainly left the Petit Palais and the Grand Palais. Among its attractions included, among other things, and large-scale projections of the Lumière brothers and the " road of the future " - a wooden escalator ( sidewalk roulant ) on which visitors could walk around the center of the exhibition. A diesel engine was demonstrated, which was operated at the request of the French government with peanut oil. A ferris wheel with a diameter of 100 meters in the Avenue de Suffren existed until 1937.

In connection with the Expo, the Paris infrastructure was modernized. Thus the first line of the Metro between Porte Maillot and Porte de Vincennes, even today, the line 1, opened on National Day, the 14th July 1900, and the new stations (Gare d' Orsay, Gare des Invalides, Gare de Lyon ) improved the offer in the long-distance transport. The Pont Alexandre III, symbol of Franco- Russian alliance was already opened on 14 April 1900.
