Eygalières

Eygalières is a commune, with its 1,752 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bouches -du -Rhône in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Eygalières located ten kilometers south-east of Saint- Remy- de -Provence on the Alpilles mountain range. The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park of the Alpilles.

The neighboring communities of eygalières are Mollégès in the north, plan Orgon in the northeast, Orgon in the east, in the southeast Eyguières, Aureille in the south, Mouriès ( point of contact ) to the southwest and Saint- Rémy -de- Provence to the west.

History

Discoveries in caves on the northern slopes of the Alpilles human presence during the Bronze Age. From the Gallo -Roman period attest many finds, such as villas, which were scattered throughout the entire municipality. From some of these villas settlements grew (Mas) such as La Tabayonne or Le Fray. In the Middle Ages, between the 7th and 15th centuries, the farmers that lived mainly on sheep farming attracted back to the most defensible area. Until the 12th century, the community was dominated by small local rulers. In the 13th and 14th century ruled by the abbesses of Mollégès over the territory in the 17th and 18th centuries, the ruling house of Lorraine Guise. However, the village was autonomous in many ways and had its own laws. Already in 1660 she could restore this ancient freedom, long before the revolution. In 1840 eygalières was supplied by a canal with water from the Durance. 1884 was followed by the connection to the railway. Agriculture was switched from the production for own use on the export within France. The old town was gradually abandoned by most residents. Between 1950 and 1970, agriculture was modernized. In recent times, among others, many foreigners settled in eygalières.
