Dave Lombardo was not Patton's first choice, but this he had Igor Cavalera ( Sepultura ), which Patton had first taken for the post in the eye, is recommended. All members were known even before the establishment of this project through their participation in other formations and work in parallel in other projects and bands, which in turn reinforces the character of the project group Fantômas.

Patton founded in 1999 simultaneously with the appearance of the first album of the band his label Ipecac, and Fantômas were performed with the self-titled debut album the first product and figurehead of the label.

Musical Idea, development and priorities

Fantômas is an experimental rock band. The focus of her music is, as the band name suggests, on the musical realization of cinematic and visual themes. The band, however, does not rely on traditional structured soundtrack formats and arrangements, but they usually employs the stylistic collage and montage, as well as frequent abrupt style, tempo and dynamic changes. In these features the music of Fantômas with the experimental music is related to some projects of the U.S. saxophonist John Zorn - such as with the project Naked City, whose works are also inspired visual- cinematic, as well as with the music of Wrath band Painkiller.

Mike Patton, the creative head of the band, as a singer not the usual rock bands in the central role of a frontman, but often uses his voice to an onomatopoeia, the function of a musical instrument accordingly. Fantômas mainly produce concept albums, are following their own chronology. An exception is the live collaboration with the band The Melvins.

The first, self-titled album by the band is a tribute to the anarchist film, comic and novel character Fantômas. Using a mixture of styles from Noise, New Age, Soundtrack, Jazz and Black Metal was a Fantômas comic page by page set to music - accordingly, the continuous track title of Book I, Page 1 to Book I, Page 30

A similar path is also pursuing the second album The Director's Cut. It is a tribute to well-known horror films and psychological thriller ( including Rosemary's Baby and The Godfather ). Parts of the soundtrack are placed in a new context by combining them with noise elements. Unlike the other albums the band but this is a traditional structured work which uniquely named Title and clearly distinct pieces contains.

In 2004 published Fantômas Delirium Cordia with a quiet and somber composition. This third album consists of one single 70 -minute piece and is regarded as the soundtrack to an imaginary horror film. For the music style of this album were early industrial bands like Current 93 or Nurse With Wound Godfather.

The fourth album from 2005, Suspended Animation, returns to speed and momentum back to the style of the first two albums back and is thematically and artistically, the opposite of the same rehearsed album Delirium Cordia. Suspended Animation interpreted the idea of animated cartoons such as Looney Tunes. The thirty individual and without apparent relation divided shreds of music as the title carry the days of the month April 2005 with consecutive dates and the April 's Fool Day to the Walpurgisnacht named after a more or less obscure holidays from all over the world.
