Field hockey at the 1936 Summer Olympics

In the XI. 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin was held a hockey tournament (men). The sport had gained in importance and for the first time in Olympic history a private hockey stadium was built. Also other expenses for the tournament was considerable. The rules have been translated into English, French and Spanish. And when the 50 dozen hockey balls from India who arrived 14 days before the start of the tournament, were found by the President of the FIH Marc Bellin du Coteau too heavy and too big, you ordered by phone new balls from England, which were delivered by plane.

Tournament mode

Each of the 11 reported team should make at least three and at most six games. Therefore, three groups were formed. For the classification of the World Hockey Association FIH had a ranking: (1) India ( 2) Germany ( 3) France. The further sequence is not known. The group winners and runners- assessed as the strongest group C qualified for the semifinals, then the medals were played.

To the teams that failed to qualify for the final, to allow more games, a consolation round was scheduled.
